I went out with my friend last night so I could make fun of this movie. I hadn’t planned on watching it but my friend wanted to see it so I took it as an opportunity for fun. Turns out, not as bad as I thought it would be, but every bit as ridiculous as I thought. Ambulance is the most I’ve laughed at a drama in so long. To start, this god damn poster being set at night despite not a single scene in this movie being at night. It all takes place before rush hour and then ends as it starts. Which leads me to, this has NO RIGHT to be two hours and sixteen minutes. I know Michael Bay is used to dumby long films but this didn’t need to be one of them. But speaking of Mr. Bay, let’s talk about the directing. I think someone recently learned what the hell a drone is because he uses the shit out of drone shots on this one. Another thing he overuses is spiny camera tricks. Spinning the camera or going upside down or playing with angles can be really good when done right. Not when used scene after scene. There was a scene at the start that made me very dizzy because he unnecessarily spun the camera around during a conversation. Bay is also inconsistent between shots, he’ll cut super quick and come back and stuff is obviously not in the same place. Let’s do some good though, Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, and Eiza Gonzalez are really good for their close quarters roles. And Bay finally makes a good female character. Garret Dillahunt, Keir O’Donnell, Moses Ingram, Cedric Sanders, Jackson White, Colin Woodell, and Olivia Stambouliah are really good side characters that each get at least one moment to shine. But despite the acting being good, a lot of the characters are inconsistent, they’re made to be one type of person and then a few scenes later they’re a totally different type of person. AmbuLAnce (stupidest title, I’m so sick of this single word title trend. It only works in very specific situations, this isn’t one) is a fun mess that’ll keep you entertained at the very least. This is one that you will like more if you spend no money on it. Wait until it’s streaming and enjoy the fun for free. I watched on IMAX and it wasn’t worth it. I’m giving it a 6/10. -Tyler.
