5/10

In 1930’s Germany, a professor is torn between his own political views of the Nazi Party and those of his friends and family. He gives up his reservations and receives a good position within the SS, not realizing the consequences his work will have.

I enjoyed this one partially but I had some problems with it. First of all, Viggo Mortensen was the best part of the movie. He’s one of my favorite actors that I’ve seen recently and he continues to nail every performance. That being said, this movie is no exception. Jason Issacs is an actor I haven’t seen much of besides his role as Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter. He was good here too which prompts me to check out more of his work. Everybody else did alright, but their roles weren’t standout and pretty easily forgettable. Now what this movie revolves around, its theme, storyline and conflicts make it interesting and realistic, but still fail to impress me. The storyline was definitely creative and offered a WWII movie that wasn’t about the fighting, but about the people in Germany who got swept into Hitler’s war propaganda. It was a point of view that makes you feel so sorry for the main character, as he has no idea what he’s gotten himself into. The conflicts of the war and also the inner conflicts of our main character as he deals with so many stressful situations is hard to watch at times, but eye opening. The fact that this war actually happened and that it affected so many people both physically and emotionally make this movie all the more sad. Definitely a realistic film about the horrors of war.

What I didn’t like about this movie was that we weren’t told much about our characters. They were just there. There was no character development, and definitely nothing in depth. The movie also lacks character motivation, why they are there, why are they doing this. It made it somewhat confusing at times. Also like I said earlier, besides Viggo and Jason, acting was alright, the actors didn’t make the characters come to life at all. It makes for an annoying experience when you don’t care about your supporting characters at all.

They also don’t add anything to the story.

Overall, a somewhat decent film with incredible acting from our two main characters, a creative and unique storyline, but not much depth throughout.
