Well… here we are. Please don’t kill me. Sony finally stopped the push back game and released Morbius and… it’s not that bad. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not particularly a good movie. But it is good mindless fun that’s worth a watch if you’re a fan of Marvel. Jared Leto is not half bad here. I think he finds a good footing in this role and I would genuinely like to see more of him. Matt Smith does a really good job playing a sympathetic character that becomes a flat villain with no explanation as to why the power corrupts him and not Morbius. Adria Arjona has no purpose in this film other than to set up a future film. Jared Harris also has no purpose and just seems out of place. Seems like most of his lines were cut. Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson are a “fun” duo that you can tell were significantly altered in reshoots. Michael Keaton has been entirely removed from the film itself and saved for the post credit scenes, of which there are two. They are pretty decent and start the set up for Sony’s Sinister Six. The acting is good from everyone though, even if their characters are pointless. The VFX are decent, the score is great. The Easter eggs are meh, and the pacing is just down right awful. They spend a long time sitting up his powers and then just jump right into the final act with no hesitation. The fight scenes look really cool and I’d love to see how they play out when fighting a Spider-Man. This movie does one hundred percent take place in Venom’s universe and features a total zero Spider-Men. If you’ve seen just two trailers, you’ve essentially seen the whole movie as it offers no other hidden surprises beyond the post credits. But at the same time, a solid half of the footage in the trailers is just not in the movie. A lot of this film was ripped out and rearranged and edited and that becomes very obvious very early on in the film. Things happen simply because they need to happen and they expect you to forget it and move along to the next thing that needs to happen. So of course this is by no means a good movie but it is a fun movie that makes for a low level enjoyable time. I’ll be adding to my collection when the physical copy is out! 6/10. -Tyler.
