I just got out of my showing for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and much like the first one, it’s not bad. This is clearly made for a younger audience. More specifically, the age old enough to know modern internet slang but too young to realize how horribly cringe it is. When Sonic randomly says “I live rent free in that guy’s head” I damn near lost it. That’s not the only instance of it either. A lot of the jokes felt like they were trying way too hard and they all felt like jokes they wrote for the first one. They legitimately feel the same. But there are some gem jokes in here, mostly physical ones and shockingly from two people (one isn’t a shock though). Ben Schwartz is still good as Sonic, I just can’t get over how little he’s changed. Idris Elba is a great addition to the series. His Knuckles is just great and is the source for a lot of the best jokes in the movie. They come from that super serious Drax type of place. Colleen O’Shaughnessey is really good as Tails but makes the character so confusing. She makes this little boy sound so much like a woman that it’s distracting to the character. Jim Carrey is absolutely, fantastically wacky and delivers such a great performance that very well could be his last. If it is, it’s a good way to go out. James Marsden gets massively sidelined this time around but still gets a few good scenes. Tika Sumpter actually gets more screen time than she did in the first and I appreciate the writers for that, I really like her. Natasha Rothwell definitely saw what people liked about her character the first time and turned all of that up to an eleven. I liked it, but I feel like a lot of people might think it’s too much. Shemar Moore is good here as a character that delivers a pretty big shock. Adam Pally and Lee Majdoub are both still good but still don’t get enough screen time to really care about their characters. The VFX look pretty good but the animated characters are just too animated to look like they should exist with these people. My Sonic lore is mostly based on these movies so I can’t say if they did the Master Gem stuff well but I can tell you it was cool as hell. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is just good family fun 7/10. -Tyler.

The post credit scene setting up Shadow is handled so well and keep me excited for Sonic 3. But also, when Sonic went full Captain Marvel in the final fight all I could think of was the Disney lawsuit coming their way. He looked exactly like she does in the movies. It was super cool though. The final scene with nice Knuckles is one of the most precious things I’ve seen and I really liked it. I thought we had moved past scary beams of light shooting into the sky but I guess not, but hey… this time it’s green and not blue.
