So staying with Netflix I also finally watched their new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. I’m pretty conflicted on this movie because I saw the horrible reviews and assumed it would be bad and came out kinda liking it. But I do have a lot of issues with it. Now before I get into this, I have to disclose that I have never seen the original film, in fact, the only movie in this series I’ve seen is the 2013 remake. But, this movie and that one start with a full recap of the original so I’ll keep living life having never seen it. Sarah Yarkin, Jacob Latimore, and Nell Hudson are just alright here. The movie is too short for any of them to get a chance to shine since the movie is mostly about Elsie Fisher. Fisher is pretty good here and I’m glad to see her back acting. Moe Dunford, Olwen Fouéré, Jessica Allain, Alice Krige, William Hope, and Jolyon Coy are okay as well but again no one has time to shine. Mark Burnham plays a really good and terrifying Leatherface that genuinely had me concerned for the characters. This movie fully committed to the gore and delivers on one of the most brutal horror sequences I’ve ever seen. The scene on the bus is so intense and would have been almost perfect if they didn’t try to tie it to their school shooting storyline. The story just felt unnecessary and like the creators didn’t really know what message they wanted to get across with it. Like they were saying guns are good but you can’t cancel us because we know that guns can be bad too. They tried to make Leatherface a sympathetic character but then completely take it away within a ten minute time span. I think it was filmed well but had way too many fake outs and close calls. Some of them come so close to dying way to many times and it got really annoying. But the kills are pretty nasty and fun making this at least worth the one watch for the gore or to make fun of it. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a decent attempt to bring back an old series that falls short of their intentions (of which I don’t think they had many beyond “chainsaw go vrrrmmmmmm, people go ahhhhh, blood go splat”). This one gets a 6/10 from me, check it out if you have the stomach for it. -Tyler.
